Hojo clan

"The Hojo are the undisputed overlords of Japan. They are ruthless in their pursuit and use of power. They understand it intimately. They took control of Japan through cunning and assassination, and now they control Japan as regents of the figurehead Shogun of the figurehead Divine Emperor. The Hojo understand that power means more than any title. Beneath them, the Samurai, no longer content to merely serve and fight, act as provincial lords for the Hojo. The Hojo have brought peace to the land, but the old warlike skills of the Samurai have not disappeared just because there has been peace. If large battles are a thing of the past, personal honor and glory are still worth fighting for! As the Hojo general, you'll need to take brave warriors and make them into an army. Personal courage and the hunt for individual glory may not be enough to defeat the Mongol barbarians. The Samurai will need leadership and organization as well as skill at arms!"
— Faction description.

The Hojo (alternatively known as the Japanese in multiplayer) are a major faction in Shogun: Total War: Mongol Invasion. The Hojo clan are one of two playable factions in the Mongol Invasion expansion for Shogun: Total War, accessible in both the campaign and multiplayer. Their starting position places them in full control over the entirety of Japan's landmass with the exception of three provinces owned by the Rebels and Ronin faction, which can be claimed quickly, and the Chikuzen province, which will fall immediately to the Mongol Horde when they arrive on turn 1. The faction starts with a powerful and vast military, as well as a strong economy, possessing significant wealth to dispense of and a suitable military force spread across the Japanese countryside: however, this comes at the cost of the Hojo's forces being spread thin to begin with, with much of their strength concentrated on the main island of Honshu, far from where the Mongol Horde will land, making it difficult to muster forces quickly to counter this threat, frustrated further by the somewhat randomized appearance of Mongol reinforcements along Japan's northern coastline. The faction's colors are purple, and their specialty is castles, which they can build 25% cheaper than other factions. Their faction capital is Yamashiro and their religion is Shinto-Buddhism. Their victory conditions require them to control all of Japan and to destroy the Mongol Horde faction. Their faction leader is known as a daimyo.

The Hojo's faction leader is Hojo Tokimune, and the faction dominates the majority of Japan, controlling all but 3 provinces and losing Chikuzen at the beginning of the campaign when the Mongols arrive. Their faction largely serves to represent Japan as a whole, as at the time they were the military and political apparatus of the ruling Kamakura shogunate, whose power was largely symbolic. As such, it is not inaccurate to refer to the Hojo faction as simply "Japan" or "the Japanese", with the latter name being used to refer to the faction in the multiplayer.

Historically, the Hojo are a representation of the Kamakura shogunate.
