Abydos, known in Ancient Egyptian as Abdju, was the capital city of the Abydos Dynasty during the Second Intermediate Period of Egypt, and one of the oldest cities of Ancient Egypt. Located in Upper Egypt, Abydos appears to have been built long before the establishment of a unified Egypt, as a city of the Kingdom of Upper Egypt. After the unification, Abydos became the site for a royal necropolis where the pharaohs of Early Dynastic Egypt were buried, now known as Umm el-Qa'ab. Abydos is the Greek name for the city, as the actual Egyptian name given to it was Abdju.

Abydos is also home to several monuments, all of which were built over long periods of time. Seti I began construction of a temple there, whereas Ramesses II finished it and then built a smaller, simpler one adjacent to it. The city still exists today, but is abandoned, left alone as a site of archaelogical importance.
