The Old Kingdom of Egypt, alternatively but rarely called the First Kingdom of Egypt and also known as the Old Egyptian Kingdom, was a state in North Africa. It was bordered by the Red Sea to the east and Nubia to the south. The Old Kingdom was a result of the degradation of Early Dynastic Egypt following a religious civil war, causing its last pharaoh to reshape it into a more politically refined state. The dominant religion in the Old Kingdom was the Ancient Egyptian religion.

Many of Egypt's most famous achievements were conducted under this state, primarily the construction of the pyramids. Many of the wars fought by the Old Kingdom were with former territories. In the end, the Old Kingdom was brought down by an immense economic and political crisis that occurred during the Sixth Dynasty, and in the chaos, the Old Kingdom broke apart.
