Khasekhem was the seventeenth pharaoh of Early Dynastic Egypt, the seventh pharaoh of the Second Dynasty of Egypt, and a former Egyptian general. Khasekhem became pharaoh when he led a military coup against Seth-Peribsen following a successful campaign to crush a Nubian rebellion, establishing himself as Peribsen's successor: it is strongly believed this was in regards to Seth-Peribsen's radical change of religious tradition. Another Egyptian, possibly a Peribsen loyalist or one of his children, declared himself pharaoh, causing Egypt to be split between the two pharaohs. With two pharaohs proclaiming themselves pharaoh of the same state, civil war was inevitable, and not long before the end of Khasekhem's reign, a schism occurred
