Uesugi clan

"The Uesugi have spent much time, effort and blood in their quest to claim the title of Shogun for their clan. This experience has made their warriors tough and their generals wise."
— Faction description.

The Uesugi are a major faction in Shogun: Total War. Present across the Sengoku Jidai, 1530, 1550 and 1580 campaigns, the Uesugi clan are one of many playable factions in Shogun: Total War, accessible in both the campaign and multiplayer. Their starting position across all four of the campaigns varies greatly, but they are generally situated in the Tōhoku region on the northern tip of the island of Honshu, varying between total control of the region, minor control of the region or being absent from the region and having a minor presence in the eastern Kantō region. The faction starts with a moderate military force and a sizable economy, largely dominating Japan's northern region of Tōhoku and large swaths of northern Chūbu, although sometimes their presence in the north is minor or reduced: in these situations, the Uesugi's position is extremely dangerous, surrounded by strong enemies on their borders, but when they possess the northern Tōhoku region, they remain a force to be reckoned with. Their faction's colors are dark blue, and their specialty is missile units, namely Samurai Archers, who they can recruit 25% cheaper than other factions. Their faction capital is Mutsu in the Sengoku Jidai campaign, Kozuke in the 1530 campaign, and Echigo in the 1550 and 1580 campaigns; their religion is Shinto-Buddhism, although they can convert to Christianity in order to trade with the Portuguese Traders. Their victory conditions require them to either control all of Japan, to control 40 of the 60 provinces of Japan, wipe out all the other factions and/or keep their clan alive for 70 years (280 turns). Their faction leader is known as a daimyo.

In the Sengoku Jidai, their faction leader is Uesugi Tomooki, and they control the entirety of the Tōhoku region with the provinces of Mutsu and Dewa, the greater northern half of the Chūbu region with the provinces of Echigo, Shinano and Hida, and Sado island. In the 1530 campaign, their faction leader is also Uesugi Tomooki, but they now only control the provinces of Musashi and Kozuke in the Kantō region. In the 1550 campaign, their faction leader is now Uesugi Kenshin, now controlling Echigo in the northern Chūbu region and Mutsu in the northeastern Tōhoku region. In the 1580 campaign, their faction leader is now Uesugi Kagekatsu, now controlling the entirety of the northern Chūbu region with the provinces of Echigo, Kaga, Noto and Etchu, parts of the northern Kantō region with Shimotsuke and Kozuke, and Sado island.

Historically, the Uesugi are a representation of the Uesugi clan.
