Shimazu clan

"Based in the southern half of Kyushu, the Shimazu are in a position of relative security from which to launch their campaigns of expansion. Their swordsmen are amongst the greatest in Japan, and they are prepared to take advantage of new ideas - even if they come from over the seas."
— Faction description.

The Shimazu are a major faction in Shogun: Total War. Present across the Sengoku Jidai, 1530, 1550 and the 1580 campaigns, the Shimazu clan are one of many playable factions in Shogun: Total War, accessible in both the campaign and multiplayer. Their starting position across all four of the campaigns varies, but they are generally situated on the island of Kyushu, varying between full control of the island and control of its southern half. The faction starts with a moderate military force and poor economy, but from a position of relative safety, backed up against the westernmost edge of the map. The faction's colors are light green, and their specialty is in heavy infantry, namely No-Dachi samurai, who they can recruit 25% cheaper than other factions. Their faction capital is Satsuma and their religion is Shinto-Buddhism, although they can convert to Christianity in order to trade with the Portuguese Traders. Their victory conditions require them to either control all of Japan, to control 40 of the 60 provinces of Japan, wipe out all the other factions and/or keep their clan alive for 70 years (280 turns). Their faction leader is known as a daimyo.

In the Sengoku Jidai, their faction leader is Shimazu Takahisa, and they control the provinces of Bungo, Higo, Hyuga, Osumi, Buzen and Satsuma in Kyushu, and Nagato on the northwesternmost tip of Chugoku on the main island of Honshu. In the 1530 campaign, their faction leader is also Shimazu Takahisa, but this time they only control the provinces of Hyuga, Osumi and Satsuma in Kyushu. In the 1550 campaign, their faction leader is again Shimazu Takahisa, and they still only control Hyuga, Osumi and Satsuma in Kyushu. In the 1580 campaign, their faction leader is now Shimazu Yoshihisa, now controlling Bungo, Higo, Hyuga, Osumi, Buzen, Satsuma, Chikugo and Chikuzen, owning almost the entirety of Kyushu.

Historically, the Shimazu are a representation of the Shimazu clan.
