- "The Imagawa clan command an enviable position in the center of Japan from which to expand. However, to ensure that they do not become surrounded by enemies, it is necessary to balance a careful web of alliances and to make use of the men of the shadows."
- — Faction description.
The Imagawa are a major faction in Shogun: Total War. Present in the Sengoku Jidai, 1530 and 1550 campaigns, the Imagawa clan are one of many playable factions in Shogun: Total War, accessible in both the campaign and multiplayer. Their starting position across the Sengoku Jidai, 1530 and 1550 campaigns varies (and they are completely absent in the 1580 campaign, replaced by the Tokugawa), but they are generally situated in the southern tip of the Chūbu region of the island of Honshu, with varying control over territory in northwestern Kyushu as well. The faction starts with a moderate military force and an average economy, but their position is tenuous, most of the time having territory far off on the island of Kyushu, making it difficult to consolidate forces: their position on Honshu also makes them vulnerable to numerous potential enemies to their north, although they are backed up against the southern edge of the map. The faction's colors are light blue, and their specialty are subterfuge agents, namely ninjas and Shinobi, who they can recruit 25% cheaper than other factions. Their faction capital is Totomi and their religion is Shinto-Buddhism, although they can convert to Christianity in order to trade with the Portuguese Traders. Their victory conditions require them to either control all of Japan, to control 40 of the 60 provinces of Japan, wipe out all the other factions and/or keep their clan alive for 70 years (280 turns). Their faction leader is known as a daimyo.
In the Sengoku Jidai, their faction leader is Imagawa Yoshimoto, and they control the provinces of Chikuzen, Chikugo and Hizen in northwestern Kyushu, and Mikawa, Totomi and Suruga in southern Chūbu on the main island of Honshu. In the 1530 campaign, their faction leader is still Imagawa Yoshimoto, and they now only control Hizen in northwestern Kyushu, and Totomi and Suruga in southern Chūbu. In the 1550 campaign, the faction leader is once again Imagawa Yoshimoto, and they no longer hold any provinces in Kyushu at all, with only Totomi, Suruga and Mikawa in Chūbu under their control.
Historically, the Imagawa are a representation of the Imagawa clan. They are absent in the 1580 campaign and replaced by the Tokugawa faction as, at the time, they had become a vassal of the then-more powerful Tokugawa clan.
