- "The name of the Hojo has a long and proud history. They were once Shoguns of Japan, remembered for driving away the Mongol Hordes, and they plan to return to their former glory. They do not trust rivals or strangers, but prefer to rely on their fighting prowess, the great wealth of their lands and their mighty fortresses."
- — Faction description.
The Hojo are a major faction in Shogun: Total War. Present across the Sengoku Jidai, 1530, 1550 and 1580 campaigns, the Hojo clan are one of many playable factions in Shogun: Total War, accessible in both the campaign and multiplayer. Their starting position across all four of the campaigns varies, but they are generally situated in the Kantō region on the island of Honshu, varying between near total control of the Kantō region, partial control of it and a minor presence there. The faction starts with a moderate military force and sizable economy, possessing sizable territory nestled in the crook of Honshu's southeastern coastline, securing them against the southernmost portion of the map and giving them ample room to expand outwards, although they are still surrounded by potential enemies to their north and west. Their faction's colors are purple, and their specialty is castles, which they can build 25% cheaper than other factions. Their faction capital is Shimosa in the Sengoku Jidai and 1580 campaigns, and Sagami in the 1530 and 1550 campaigns; their religion is Shinto-Buddhism, although they can convert to Christianity in order to trade with the Portuguese Traders. Their victory conditions require them to either control all of Japan, to control 40 of the 60 provinces of Japan, wipe out all the other factions and/or keep their clan alive for 70 years (280 turns). Their faction leader is known as a daimyo.
In the Sengoku Jidai, their faction leader is Hojo Ujitsuna, and they control almost the entirety of the Kantō region of the island of Honshu, including the provinces of Shimosa, Musashi, Shimotsuke, Kozuke, Hitachi and Kazusa. In the 1530 campaign, their faction leader is Hojo Ujitsuna, but they now only control the province of Sagami in the Kantō region. In the 1550 campaign, their faction leader is now Hojo Ujiyasu, now controlling a portion of the Kantō region with the provinces of Sagami, Musashi, Hitachi and Shimosa, and the province of Izu in the Chūbu region. In the 1580 campaign, their faction leader is now Hojo Ujimasa, and they now control Sagami, Musashi and Shimosa in the Kantō region, and Izu in the Chūbu region.
Historically, the Hojo are a representation of the Hojo clan.
