History:

The Ancient Egyptian army, known contemporarily as the Egyptian army or possibly the Royal Egyptian army, was the terrestrial and naval military forces of Ancient Egypt, from Early Dynastic Egypt to Late Dynastic Egypt. During the Early Dynastic Period, it likely possessed a small army with a simplistic naval force, as the army would have consisted of the combined elements of the former Upper and Lower Egyptian armies. Upon the formation of the Old Kingdom, this army became far more efficient and better functioning, and possibly larger in size. While the Egyptians did not place huge emphasis on a navy, evidence of its use has been proven: its largely believed an official navy was established by Pharaoh Sahure.

Before the New Kingdom, the army was basic, composed of peasants and artisans who were called to war when the Pharaoh decreed it, and was not a standing force. During the New Kingdom, the advancement of weapons technology and introduction of the chariot into Ancient Egypt's military, as well as the change from a reserve army to a professional fighting force, meant that the Egyptian army became more complex and powerful.
