Featured articleShogun: Total War (abbreviated STW and retrospectively as Shogun 1) is the first installment in the Total War franchise developed by Creative Assembly and published by Electronic Arts. Originally released on 13 June 2000, Shogun: Total War is set in the Sengoku Jidai period of feudal Japan and is not only the first instalment of the Total War franchise, but also Creative Assembly's first venture into the grand strategy genre. As a turn-based strategy/real-time tactics hybrid, Shogun: Total War gives the player control of a Japanese clan with the goal of the conquest of Japan and attaining the coveted title of Shogun. Announced in early 1999, Shogun: Total War was a high risk product for Creative Assembly, one that incorporated revolutionary 3D computer generated real-time battles in addition to a turn-based strategic campaign map that was added later in development to give context to the battles. Thanks to the success of the game, it spawned an entire franchise, which went on to not only cover different periods and locations of history, but eventually into fantasy with the Warhammer titles. |
